Railway stations on track for new housing

The Chancellor has acknowledged the role infrastructure plays in delivering sustainable communities after announcing a partnership to bring forward land for housing around railway stations.

He has said the Homes and Communities Agency will work in partnership with Network Rail and local authorities to provide land around stations for housing, commercial development and regeneration. It is understood the government will shortly announce which sites will take part in the scheme.

In Kent, masterplanning is already under way around Ebbsfleet International Station as part of the Ebbsfleet Garden City, so we can assume that’ll be on the list.

This might be a shot in the dark, but another site the government might look at is the proposed Thanet Parkway station, close to the the former Manston Airport. It is also near Manston Green, the site approved for the development of 700 homes and community facilities by Thanet District Council.

The proposed station – which could be up and running by 2020 – has the backing of Kent County Council, the Kent & Medway Economic Board, and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.

I’m sure the team behind Stone Hill Park, and their opponents, will be watching with interest to see if the site of Parkway Station is one shortlisted by the new initiative.
