Consultation on major military site in Medway

Proposals to develop 260 homes at Kitchener Barracks, off Dock Road, Chatham, have been unveiled.

Following work by the owners and architects with Medway Council and English Heritage, developers JG Chatham Ltd, and London-based architects Latis, are consulting on plans for 260 homes on the 11.22 acre site, which has been in continuous military use since 1757.

The plans would convert the main 1930s Khartoum building into residential apartments and replace the 1950s extension with three apartment blocks.

The site, which includes a conservation area and number of Grade II listed buildings, was sold by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation earlier this year.

It is expected that an outline planning application will be submitted to Medway Council before the end of the year and, if approved, building work could start by the end of 2015.
